Oct. 25, 2008
BEVERLY, Mass. - Endicott College senior forward Kyle Schmutte (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored his second goal of the game five minutes into the first overtime as the Gulls overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat Anna Maria College 3-2 in TCCC action on Saturday. The win moves the Gulls to 5-11-1 (5-7-1 TCCC) while the defeat drops the AMCATS to 4-7 in the TCCC and 5-11-0 overall.
Anna Maria was able to jump out quickly on the Gulls as Joshua Bernardo (Peabody, Mass.) blasted an unassisted goal past Endicott's Jack DeJesus (Swampscott, Mass.) about ten minutes into the contest for an early 1-0 lead. Nearly two minutes later, the AMCATS struck again as George Markopoulos (Worcester, Mass.) was able to score on a penalty shot after a foul in the box.
The Gulls would not be able to answer until about 25 minutes into the second frame. Schmutte was able to score his first goal of the game on a cross from Nick Goldman (South Windsor, Conn.) to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Three minutes later, Gregory Capece (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) was able to convert an Anna Maria turnover in the box to an unassisted goal to tie the game at 2-2. Each team would try to score the game winner in the final 13 minutes of the game but the game would have to spill into the extra frame.
In overtime, Schmutte would be able to take a cross from Capece and put the game away as he made a nifty spin move past a defender and scored a goal past the diving effort of Scott Burokas (Auburn, Mass.). The goal gave Endicott their second straight win as they prepare for a push into the TCCC playoffs.
Endicott's DeJesus would be able to make three saves in the victory while Burokas made seven for the AMCATS.
The Blue and Green will host Fitchburg State College on the team's senior day on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Anna Maria looks to bounce back when it hosts Nichols College on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
