March 18, 2008
NORTON, Mass. - Previously winless Wheaton College got four goals from freshman Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, Mass.) including the game-winner with 1:11 remaining, as the Lyons upset nationally-ranked Endicott College, 11-9 on Tuesday in Mirrione Stadium. Wheaton notches its first win of the year (1-2), while the Gulls suffer their first setback, falling to 5-1.
During a back-and-forth opening quarter, Lyon senior Richie Rasamny (Redding, Conn.) scored first with 6:22 to play before Endicott junior Eddie O'Reilly (Beverly, Mass.) countered 1:07 later. After Wheaton regained the lead at 2:48, the Gulls scored twice with the man advantage during a 1:02 stretch late in the period to take a 3-2 edge by the end of the first stanza.
Sophomore Tim Horan (Cheshire, Conn.) knotted the contest for Wheaton 2:19 into the second quarter, and Cederberg scored twice in the period as the Lyons carried a 5-3 edge into halftime. A Cederberg tally with 8:21 to go in the third pushed the hosts to a 7-4 advantage, and freshman Chris Landers' (Manchester, Mass.) marker with 26.9 ticks remaining made it 8-5.
Endicott came all the way back in the fourth quarter, as a 17-4 advantage in shots led to four goals. Junior David Scarfo (Billerica, Mass.) assisted the first two, finding classmate Brandon Dube (Danvers, Mass.) for a tally at 9:31 that brought the Gulls within one, 8-7, but Horan responded 1:26 later to put the Lyons back up by two. Just 17 seconds after that, Endicott junior Nick Cosco (Londonderry, N.H.) scored his second goal of the period, and O'Reilly's second marker of the game with 3:11 left knotted the score.
However, Wheaton made good on its only man-up opportunity of the game with time winding down, as Cederberg converted a Rasamny pass with 1:11 to go in regulation and just three seconds remaining on the penalty. Landers tallied an insurance marker with 14.2 ticks left to ice the win.
Horan, Landers and junior Jeff Gomer (Duxbury, Mass.) netted two goals apiece, Rasamny had a goal and two assists, while sophomore Drew Schaffer (New Haven, Conn.) contributed a pair of helpers. Sophomore Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, Conn.) made 13 saves, including five in the final period, to corral the win.
Endicott, which held a 41-20 advantage in shots, was led by Cosco's hat trick. O'Reilly turned in two goals and an assist, Scarfo notched a goal and two helpers, and senior John Ortolani (Billerica, Mass.) went 17-of-24 on face-offs. Sophomore Eric Hagarty (Sudbury, Mass.) made four saves before being relieved with 4:30 to go in the game by junior Sean Kearney (Mahopac, N.Y.), who was saddled with the loss.
Endicott has a full-week off as the Gulls don't return to action again until Tuesday, March 25th when they will host Bowdoin College. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Beverly, Mass.
